Going to Europe in August
07/27/09 at 22:01:19

OK this is not microwave related, but this category seems to get the most traffic...

I am taking my family to Europe and will rent a car and drive around parts of northern Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

My two kids are 17 (boy) and 19 years old (girl).  I want to find things to do that will be thoroughly annoying to them.  My first thought is to go to a Doo-Wop concert if such a thing exists.  Or possibly about an act I know they will dislike such as the Ting Tings... Another alternative might be to see the largest ball of string in Europe if it is nearby, or a really bad wax museum. Or stay on a farm, where the window opens onto a cow pasture and you get to watch the farmer beheading your dinner.  Yes, that would be perfection, but only if there was no wireless internet or cell towers nearby...

Does anyone have ideas that I can use to torture my spoiled American kids?

Maybe you can find a good, old fashioned dungeon to tour.

Make them take part in a Roman vs. Barbarian reenactment.

I wish my parent were as cool as you!

I don't think any kid ever thought his own parents were "cool", it must be in our genes.  But I will take your suggestion and your compliment!

I am having other thoughts... a polka festival... or a concert employing those very long and silly swiss horns up in the alps, perfomed by men in lederhosen...  but even if we went to UK I would have to draw the line here: no bagpipe concert, I don't think I could survive that much fun myself...

Hi UE
In Switzerland, rent a chalet many kilometers from the nearest cell base, with only off-air TV with 2 channels in a local German dialect. Pitch them out of their pits at 5am into mountain air at -5 celcius for a 5km jog before a muesli and prunes breakfast. Then, with no dishwasher, they have to do the washing up.
For relaxation during the day, sailing on Lake Neuchatel in a steady drizzle, with a breeze gusting force 1. Three hours of that should do the trick.
Oh, if you are visiting UK, the worst fiendishly brutal torture is to stand in the drizzle and watch 3 hours of Morris Dancing.

You can choose a random village in Slovenia or Slovakia and visit it. People there are very unlikely to speak English, and there shouldn't be anything to see but fields.
Or you could look for a traditional dance festival, but that would be very cruel.

I found the perfect solution

take them to Milan, leave all valuables in car

come back later, no more iphone, ipod, gameboy!  Ed Hardy sweatshirt bye bye, along with Tiffany necklace...

Make them water ski behind a gondola.

Good point about Phoenix! Stay out of there.

I thought I had an "Alp Horn" concert lined up but it fell through.  But we did take in the Museum of Yodeling in KastleRuth.  Those local guyz sold more albums than Michael Jackson!  But I couldn't bring myself to part with 20 Euros for the CD...

A few years ago I went to a small town in Northern Italy and spent a few days hiking through the dolimites, which are the Southern portion of the alps. By day we hiked through the most beautiful mountain scenery and at night we stayed in places similar to hostels called refugios. We carried basic personal items like clothes and the refugios had food as well as bedding. Was definitely the highlight of my Italy trip. A great way to get away from the other tourists and see places of the country where the locals don't despise Americans...although that last part may have changed after the things W did to this country's reputation!

Takes some planning but definitely worth it!

How was your trip?

Was it like a Chevy Chase movie?

Europe was much fun.  The place my daughter hated the most was the Ballenberg open air museum

she does not like to be reminded of farm odors, and has no interest in cheesemaking, or charcoal production.  Perhaps some day she can take her kids there for a punishment.
