Updated December 2010! What's a feedthrough? In microwaves, it is generally something that passes an electrical connection from inside to outside of a box... however, these days it might also refer to a connection from one side of a circuit board to the other side.
There are many types of feedthroughs, but let's generalize them into two categories: RF feedthroughs (usually 50 ohms), and DC filter (generally, low-pass) feedthroughs. And let's further generalize into two types of construction, glass feedthroughs, and ceramic feedthroughs.
Feedthroughs are generally constructed to provide hermeticity.
