Are 3rd party (external) recruiters worth dealing with? By 3rd party recruiters I mean companies or individuals that serve as a middle-man between you and the hiring company. Early in my career I worked with an engineer that had extensive experience with multiple recruiters, mostly for limited-term contract positions; his stories left me with a poor opinion of recruiters, such that I made a mental note to avoid them whenever possible. Now later my career I am having difficulty finding appealing jobs in the region I would like to live. There are sometimes postings by recruiters that look appealing, but I am unable to decipher from the description what is the hiring company, as a means of side-stepping the recruiter.
Am I misguided in avoiding recruiters? What guidelines would you recommend in working with a recruiter?
I went on one interview that was set up by a recruiter in more than 30 years. I did not find a good fit with the company. And he threw a fit when I told him.
They do not have your best interest in mind. Still they are good at finding opportunities. You need to let them know in advance that you will not be forced into taking any job that comes around. My experience left a bad taste. I still talk to them but it never goes to far.
